Recent election results in the GTA

In the aftermath of the federal Liberals’ crushing victory in Mississauga—Lakeshore, a riding that provincial Liberals had lost just 6 months before, I mapped out the victors in the various GTA ridings, both federally (left) and provincially (right), for the current and previous sets of riding boundaries.

Here I included the Guelph—Kitchener-Waterloo—Cambridge triangle in “GTA” (perhaps unwisely) because in my mind it felt “metropolitan” rather than “regional”, and it is within the GO Transit commuter area, and its voters got swept up in the Trudeau tide. I realize the Barrie ridings should be included by these criteria too, but because Trudeau didn’t win them, they feel less winnable provincially as well.

The summary rows at the top should be read as: “in 2015, 56 out of the Liberals’ 80 Ontario seats were from the GTA”.
